We wanted a service that catered primarily for those who may not otherwise be able to afford counselling and psychotherapy. The Psychotherapy Room is a proud placement provider for the trainee counsellors and psychotherapists studying at the University of Derby and as such we charge a reduced fee of £25 for work with one of our trainees. Our fee for work with a qualified therapist is £30. We also offer concessionary rates for students and those in financial hardship which can be discussed at our free initial assessment
We wanted to ensure we were easily accessible and so chose a location in the heart of Derby City Centre that had close links to the bus and the train station, both just a short walk away. We chose premises close to an NCP car park thus ensuring that we were accessible by all modes of transportation. You will notice our location is discreetly situated to ensure your levels of privacy are maintained.
We understand that maintaining a work-life balance can be tricky and so here at The Psychotherapy Room we pride ourselves on offering sessions Monday through to Sunday, 0700-2100. This ensures you can choose the most convenient slot that works for you. We also offer both male and female therapists, all members of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), so that you can be assured your therapist is conducting a safe and ethical practice. Our therapists come from a variety of backgrounds bringing their own expertise and life experience to The Psychotherapy Room. We have therapists who are able to offer counselling and psychotherapy in English, Polish, Punjabi and Greek.
What is counselling and psychotherapy?
The terms counselling and psychotherapy are often used interchangeably and overlap in a number of ways. The key difference between the two is in the length; counselling is often shorter in duration and centres around behaviour patterns. Issues are explored in the present tense without focussing too much on the role of past experiences. It can help you identify problems and encourages implementing positive steps to resolve these issues. Psychotherapy is usually longer in duration (sometimes over several years) and focusses on gaining a deeper awareness of emotional problems and difficulties, looking at the foundation of the problem. A consideration is given to recurrent feelings, chronic issues and overall patterns. A willingness to explore the past and its impact on the present is therefore required within psychotherapy. One of the aims of psychotherapy is therefore to develop a greater sense of self-awareness in order to help resolve the underlying issues impacting your present so that a foundation can be set for a more satisfying future.
In short, counselling is a short-term process that encourages a change of behaviour whereas psychotherapy is a long-term process exploring psychological problems that have built up over a long time and helps you to understand your feelings, thoughts and actions more clearly by examining your past experiences.
What modalities do we use?
This is a way to describe how we work. Integrative counselling and psychotherapy is a combined approach that incorporates different elements of specific therapies. We take the view that there is no single approach that works for each client in all situations but rather, each individual needs to be considered as a whole and as such counselling and psychotherapy must be tailored to each individual need and circumstance. In this way of working, an integrative approach conceptualises there are lots of ways that humans can be understood and explored and no one theory by itself can do that. Even if each theories underpinning principles contradict one another, they still hold value- therefore there is a need to integrate them. We tailor the counselling and psychotherapy to the clients and not the clients to the counselling and psychotherapy!
Attachment Theory (AT)
Attachment Theory conceptualises the safety and security by a primary caregiver to an infant as vital to increasing the infants survival chances. The importance of the individuals early years and first relationship with their primary caregivers is explored in psychotherapy to see what impact they have on them in the present day. This can be very helpful in understanding and examining unprocessed feelings within these early relationships, and how they may be playing out in unhelpful ways in adulthood.
Person-Centred Therapy (PCT)
Person-Centred Therapy is a non-directive humanistic approach. It works on the basis that individuals have a natural innate drive towards their own wellbeing, otherwise known as their self-actualising tendency.
Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy is a type of talking treatment which focuses on how your thoughts, beliefs and attitudes affect your feelings and behaviour, and teaches you coping skills for dealing with different problems.

How much do you charge?
The first in-depth assessment session will be free of charge to allow both you and the service to understand if this is the right fit for you.
If you choose to engage in our services, the rate for all subsequent sessions is £35.
The Psychotherapy Room is also proud to be a placement provider in Derbyshire for counsellors and psychotherapists undergoing their training. If you are allocated to a trainee, the rate for these sessions is £25.
Whereabouts are you?
We are located in the heart of Derby City Centre at The Wendy Centre on Wilson Street. You can find us adjacent to Victoria Street behind the Old Debenhams. For our full address see our contact page.
The area includes an NCP and several pay and display machines for those travelling by car.
Can you tell me more about my sessions?
We offer a flexible service 7 days a week (including bank holidays) early until late evening to best fit your schedule. We have no minimum or maximum number of sessions as we believe that this is your decision to make. You can pause or end your sessions as often as you need and you’re always welcome to come back to The Psychotherapy Room, be that via weekly, fortnighly or monthly sessions.
The therapist will work with you for 50 minutes per session and conduct regular reviews to ensure you feel you’re on the right track.
Who can attend counselling and psychotherapy?
Here at The Psychotherapy Room we offer one to one support for those aged 16 years and above.
We are able to deliver your sessions face to face, or work through alternative mediums such as skype or telephone consultations. Here at The Psychotherapy Room, we are client-centred, always putting you first.
Am I ready for therapy?
If you’re asking yourself this question then it means you are thinking through if this is something that you want. Beginning this process is a personal decision that clients will have to make for themselves. Therefore, perhaps it would help to ask yourself the question in a different way.
Do things need to change? Am I able to talk to someone about some of my problems/challenges? Am I ready to think about things in a different way? Do I want to make some changes in my life?
Maybe you have mixed feelings: you might want therapy and believe you could benefit from therapy but you are also feeling anxious or hesitant. That’s okay, we can discuss this together at the free initial assessment to help you reach a decision.
What happens if I do not like my therapist?
The relationship between the therapist and the client is one of the factors that will lead to positive therapeutic growth, so it is important to feel comfortable with the therapist you are working with.
If you find you are uncomfortable with your therapist and feel you cannot work with them then we would be happy to reallocate you to another within the service; we have many therapists available with a range of expertise.
If you find The Psychotherapy Room is not the right fit for you, thats okay too, we can signpost you to another service in the area.
